Inside the Inimitable Styles of 3 Iconic New England Summer Resort Towns

Delightful Summer Destinations: Kennebunkport, Maine; Nantucket, Massachusetts; And Newport, Rhode Island – has been visited (and revised) for centuries. But these historic enclaves in the northeast are very similar and different: they all have a loved character that is only found on their beaches. Kennebunkport’s aesthetics (with its rattan painted painted white) differ from Newport (with dark wood and stripes). Take a look at the timeless design stories specific to each site.

KNOWLEDGE, MAINE

HISTORY: This enclave contains the best of Maine: a fishing village (or lobster) with pedigree. From 1755 to the mid-19th century, trade focused on the construction of oceanic vessels. People who are associated with this activity (like ship’s officers) decorated their home with a wealth of treasures collected during their experience.

In the mid-1800s, “New Riches” in the Midwest (including Walker, the ancestors of President George W. Bush and President George W. Bush) discovered this goal. Summer residents preferred “cottages” to the pebble with comfortable and worn furniture.

Decorates: The textiles are in chintz and the walls are decorated with a palette of colors used by the sea (for example, a gray / green called “Kennebunkport Green”). The furniture comes from northeastern manufacturers (eg Heywood-Wakefield), and Kennebunkport’s most characteristic pieces are painted white and braided.

Kirsten Camp, from the Kennebunkport Historical Society, said: “People have really maintained this sense of spaciousness and brightness, especially with these basket furniture. This Laura Ashley look is still very popular. This is a very light feeling, very white, very “sea” “”

This White Barn Inn suite is dressed in “Kennebunkport green”—or, as Kirsten Camp of the Kennebunkport Historical Society describes it, “that wonderful green.”
